I am having problems installing the service pack 5a (cfgchar problem).

Answer:

To resolve the cfgchar problem, try the following:

1. It's from readme.txt:

Verify that the PATH variable used to display or set the search
path for executable files does not contain quotation marks. If
it does, remove them. To verify your PATH variable, type
PATH in the command prompt of the systems on which you plan
to install Service Pack 5. Running the service pack installation
may fail with the following message if this is not corrected:

"Setup initialization could not be successfully completed.
cfgchar.exe could not be executed. Please check the relevant
  out file"
2. Check that the full directory path you are installing from does not include any spaces.

It's from readme.txt:

however, you need to make sure that the directory name does not
contain space characters.
3. Check the relevant out file (C:\MSSQL\INSTALL\cfgchar.out path for example). You can find this OUT file in subdirectory INSTALL of your MS SQL installation directory.

Please, read very attentively file readme.txt (it contain step by step guide to install sp5a).
